Autoimmune diseases arise when the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, mistakenly targets the body’s own tissues. Normally, the immune system distinguishes between self and nonself-cells, attacking only foreign invaders. In autoimmunity, this recognition system malfunctions, leading to inflammation and damage to healthy tissues and organs. These diseases can affect nearly any part of the body, including the skin, joints, muscles, and vital organs, causing a wide range of symptoms and complications.
