Abstract

Role of science communications during pandemic: impact and usefulness

Archana Chawla

Covid-19 Pandemic has impacted the World in innumerable ways. The financial loss and loss of lives have affected every corner of the World. The countries which were able to stop and control the spread of the virus had a considerable contribution of citizens that followed the guidelines and rules of infection control. The proper understanding of the infection spread and ways to control it was essential for the people. In Singapore, most of this communication was done by the officers deployed as Social distancing enforcement officers apart from online platforms. These officers went to the general public to educate and enforce the measures suggested by the WHO. They went on foot to parks, markets, housing complexes, malls, and industrial areas to make people aware of safe distancing measures and their importance. They made sure that people understand the concept of infection control. They played a massive role in the Singapore Covid-19 Succes story. But was it the only factor in infection control? Are we ready for citizen partnership in case of future Pandemics? Can we trust people to follow the infection control measures without resorting to enforcement measures like fines and punishment? And lastly, steps to be taken to develop trust in citizen-scientist fellowship during the global spread of infections.
