Nutritional immunology is a relatively new field that studies the relationship between diet and the immune system. It examines how different nutrients, dietary patterns, and nutritional interventions impact immune function and disease outcomes. This field of study has grown in importance in recent years as researchers have become increasingly interested in the role of nutrition in preventing and treating diseases.
The role of nutrition in immune function
The immune system is the body's defense against infection and disease. It is a complex system that involves many different types of cells and molecules working together to protect the body. Nutrition plays a critical role in immune function because many of the cells and molecules involved in the immune response require specific nutrients to function properly. For example, immune cells such as T cells and B cells require amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, to function properly. Vitamin A is essential for the development and function of immune cells, and vitamin C is involved in the production of antibodies, which help to fight infection.
Dietary patterns and immune function
In addition to individual nutrients, dietary patterns can also impact immune function. For example, the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may improve immune function. On the other hand, diets high in saturated fat and sugar have been shown to have proinflammatory effects and may impair immune function. These dietary patterns have been linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, all of which are associated with impaired immune function.

For example, studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation can improve immune function and reduce the risk of respiratory infections. Zinc supplementation has also been shown to have immuneboosting effects, particularly in older adults. Probiotics, which are live microorganisms that are beneficial to health, have also been studied for their immune-boosting effects. Studies have shown that certain strains of probiotics can improve immune function and reduce the risk of respiratory infections.
The impact of nutrition on disease outcomes
Nutrition can also impact disease outcomes, particularly in individuals with compromised immune function. For example, individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) have a weakened immune system and are at increased risk of infections. Proper nutrition is critical for these individuals because it can help to maintain immune function and reduce the risk of infections.
Similarly, individuals undergoing cancer treatment often experience compromised immune function as a result of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Nutritional interventions, such as the use of supplements or fortified foods, can help to maintain immune function and reduce the risk of infections in these individuals.
