Biography

Dr. Daniel Gámez is a dedicated geriatrician serving in the Geriatric Service at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) and University Hospital Dr. José E. González in Monterrey, Mexico. He has a solid academic foundation, having completed his medical degree at UANL, followed by specialized training in geriatrics and internal medicine. Dr. Gámez’s expertise lies in managing the complex health issues of older adults, focusing on age-related diseases such as dementia, osteoporosis, cardiovascular conditions, and frailty. His clinical work emphasizes holistic care, addressing both the medical and psychosocial aspects of aging, and ensuring that elderly patients receive comprehensive, patient-centered care. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Gámez is an active educator, mentoring medical students and residents at UANL. He is deeply involved in advancing geriatric care through teaching, helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. Dr. Gámez also participates in research projects aimed at improving the health and quality of life of older adults, contributing to the development of better healthcare strategies for Mexico’s aging population.

    Background: There continues to be controversy on the clinical relevance of elderly mild subclinical hypothyroidism (SH), defined as a TSH elevation (4.0-9.99 μIU/L) with normal free thyroxin levels. Objective: To compare physical performance (PP) in elderly individuals with a TSH level above normal range versus normal counterparts. Design: Case-control study of ambulatory patients enrolled between January 2009 and December 2010. Setting: Outpatient geriatric service. Participants: Elderly individuals 65-84 years old (y/o) with SH and without conditions known to affect physical mobility. Measurements: The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) was performed.
