Rega Institute for Medical Research, University of Leuven, Belgium
Dr. Schols is a professor at the University of Leuven, Belgium. His research is mainly focused on the development of new antiretroviral drugs that interfere with the entry of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) into its target cells. His research team investigates novel agents that specifically interact with the main cellular receptors for HIV, i.e., the CD4 receptor and the chemokine receptors CXCR4 and CCR5. The CXCR4 receptor antagonist AMD3100 (Mozobil) was the first specific CXCR4 inhibitor with potent HIV activity discovered in his laboratory.
