Biography
Dr. Ostir's areas of research interest include the study of functional status and disability, the prevalence and impact of multiple co-existing chronic conditions on health outcome, and methods of assessment of health and functional status. He has a particular interest in understanding the disablement process and how to best assess the various steps along this pathway using innovative techniques. He also initiated work on the clinical application of physical performance testing in both the outpatient and hospital clinical settings. Over 70 of his publications address measurement, evaluation, and data analysis issues relevant to supporting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. I have more than ten years of experience working with senior investigators in developing training programs and serving as a co-Investigator and senior mentor for a T32 training grant at the University of Texas Medical Branch. I have supervised over 30 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and physician investigators. My graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty development experiences reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary research and scientific training in aging and health outcomes. In summary, my clinical training (respiratory therapy), research qualifications, and academic experience provide the knowledge and skills to serve as a mentor for the NIH/NIA training grant.
