Dr. Karim Ben Hamed's research investigated the specificities in the response of halophytes to salt stress that distinguishes them from glycophytes. Our results showed that the superior salinity tolerance in halophytes is mainly attributed to a set of complementary and well-orchestrated mechanisms where H2O2 and antioxidant enzymes may play an important role in the early acclimation to salt stress. Halophytes are also special in the rapid and efficient regulation of salt-induced programmed cell death. We also gave special attention to the responses of halophytes to stress combinations, which interestingly does not reflect an additive effect.
