Ivan Paunovic

Biography

Dr. Ivan Paunović, born on June 25, 1955, in Belgrade, Serbia, is a distinguished endocrine surgeon with extensive experience in the surgical management of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal gland disorders. He graduated from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine in 1981 and completed his specialization in general surgery in 1988. Dr. Paunović earned his Master's degree in 1984 with a thesis on the clinical significance of serum SHBG levels in women with menstrual cycle disorders and obtained his Ph.D. in 2001, focusing on the surgical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of medullary thyroid carcinoma. In his academic career, Dr. Paunović has progressed from assistant in 1992 to full professor in 2013 at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Medicine. He served as the head of the Center for Endocrine Surgery at the Clinical Center of Serbia from 2002 to 2018. Dr. Paunović is a member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS), the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons, and the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Throughout his career, Dr. Paunović has authored or co-authored over 300 scientific publications and book chapters, contributing significantly to the field of endocrine surgery. He has also mentored numerous graduate, master's, and doctoral students, fostering the development of future medical professionals.

    Surgical Treatment of Large Neglected Tall-Cell Thyroid Papillary Cancer with Neck Skin Infiltration and Exulceration: A Case Report and Literature

    Background: To present for the first time a clinical case of a patient with giant neglected and exulcerated tall-cell papillary thyroid cancer, who was surgically treated. Methods: We report a case of a 73-year-old woman with large firm infiltrated and exulcerated anterior neck tumefaction (12 cm in diameter) clinically suspected as anaplastic thyroid cancer. Patient had a goiter for more than 20 years with rapid growth in last months, after that presented with infiltration and exulceration of the skin. Results: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) revealed papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Total thyroidectomy with en-block dissection of the infrahyoid muscles and skin was performed.
