Shahid Jameel was born on 8 August 1957 in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to Abdul Majid Siddiqui, a medical academic, and his wife Jameela Aleem. He obtained a BSc degree from Aligarh Muslim University in 1977 and an MSc degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1979.Jameel did his doctoral studies at Washington State University where he received his PhD degree in Biochemistry in 1984.
