Biography

Dr. Andriy E. Kovalenko is a distinguished surgeon and professor specializing in endocrine gland surgery at the V.P. Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism, part of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. As the Head of the Department of Endocrine Glands Surgery, he has significantly advanced the field of endocrine surgery through both clinical practice and research. Dr. Kovalenko's scholarly contributions are substantial, with over 933 citations reflecting the impact of his work. His research primarily focuses on thyroid pathology, including the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer and other endocrine disorders. Notably, he co-authored the study "Expression and Activity of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2) in Normal Tissues and Human Thyroid Tumors," published in the SM Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. This research provided valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying thyroid tumorigenesis. In 2018, Dr. Kovalenko contributed to the study "Main Prognostic Factors for Well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Analysis of Combined Patients' Treatment Results During 20 Years After Surgery," featured in the Journal of Thyroid Disorders & Therapy. This long-term analysis identified key prognostic factors influencing patient outcomes, thereby informing surgical strategies and postoperative management. Dr. Kovalenko's expertise extends to the surgical management of pheochromocytoma, as evidenced by his authorship of "Pheochromocytoma: Modern Approaches to Diagnosis and Treatment," which discusses contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for this rare adrenal tumor. Through his leadership at the V.P. Komisarenko Institute, Dr. Kovalenko continues to advance the field of endocrine surgery in Ukraine, contributing to improved patient outcomes and the development of innovative treatment protocols. His dedication to research and education has solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the medical community.

Background: In general, the prognosis in patients with well differentiated thyroid carcinoma (WDTC) is excellent. However, there are small cohorts of patients who experience a more aggressive form of disease which is often associated with certain poor prognostic factors. Identifying these patients at an early stage is imperative for guiding treatment decisions. The purpose of the work is to study the cumulative survival of patients with WDTC, depending on a number of clinical and biological characteristics of tumors. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients operated on WDTC in the period from 1995 to 2015 (5526 people). Each patient was analyzed according to age, gender, tumor size and characteristics of the TNM (7 editions), clinical stage, volume of surgery, number of points on the MACIS scale, risk group, number of courses of rad..
