    Hand Transplantation versus Prosthetic Substitution in Upper Extremity Amputees: Current Practice and Future Prospects

    Hand transplantation and prosthetic substitution are the only two concepts available to restore hand function after hand loss. However, the indication for either technique must be carefully weighed for each patient. Recent investigations have shown no significant difference between transplanted and prosthetic hands in below elbow amputees. Thus, treatment should be guided by what is most beneficial for the patient with the least risk of harm.
