Biography

Dr. Shoshana Herzig is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a clinician investigator in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care Sections of Hospital Medicine and Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). She joined the faculty in 2010 after six highly successful years as a resident, chief resident, and fellow at BIDMC and Harvard Medical School.

Research Interest

Her research interests are focused on patterns of medication utilization in the inpatient setting and associated outcomes, with the goal of informing physician decision-making in this realm. Her work thus far has focused on the risks and benefits of 2 commonly used classes of medications: acid-suppressive medications and sedating medications. Her work on acid-suppressive medication has provided an evidence base for decisions surrounding use of this class of medications in non-critically ill hospitalized patients. She received a Young Clinician Research Award from the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology to develop a clinical decision support tool to reduce medication use fragmentation across transitions in care, focusing specifically on acid-suppressive medication. Her present work, funded by a K23 Award from the National Institute on Aging, aims to improve the care of hospitalized older adults through safer prescribing of sedating medications. In addition to extramural funding, Dr. Herzig has won several awards for her research, including the Mack Lipkin, Sr. Associate Member Award and the Geriatric Abstract Stipend Award, both from the Society of General Internal Medicine. She additionally serves as the BIDMC site principal investigator for the Hospital Medicine Research and Reengineering Network (HOMERUN) – a nationwide research organization focused on measuring and improving the outcomes of hospitalized patients – and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
