    Proteomic Analyses of Proteins Differentially Expressed in Recurrent and Primary Pterygia

    We describe a proteomic approach to identify proteins which may be involved in the recurrence of pterygia. Tissues from a recurrent pterygium and from a primary pterygium were surgically resected and were analyzed by proteomics to identify proteins that were significantly up- or down-regulated. The proteins showing significant differences in the two tissues were identified by mass spectrometry. Eleven proteins were differentially expressed; seven proteins were up-regulated and four proteins were down-regulated in the recurrent pterygium. The identified proteins are known to regulate cell cycle, cell organization, extracellular matrix, cholesterol metabolism, and cell signaling.
