Biography

Dr. Bernadett Lévay is a distinguished surgeon and plastic surgeon at the National Institute of Oncology (NIO) in Budapest, Hungary. She holds European Board certifications in both plastic surgery (EBOPRAS) and neck endocrine surgery (FEBS), enabling her to practice across Europe. Her clinical expertise encompasses thyroid surgery and the management of thyroid diseases. In 2020, Dr. Lévay co-authored the study "Thyroid Surgery in Local Anaesthesia: Renewal of an Old Method," published in the Journal of Thyroid Disorders & Therapy. This research revisits the practice of performing thyroid surgeries under local anesthesia, discussing its feasibility and benefits in modern surgical settings. In 2022, she presented "TOETVA—Scarless Thyroid Surgery in Hungary" at the 44th Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association. This work explores the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA), highlighting its cosmetic advantages and applicability in Hungary. Dr. Lévay also contributed to the study "No Correlation between PD-L1 and NIS Expression in Lymph Node Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma," published in Diagnostics in 2023. This research investigates the relationship between programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) expressions in metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma, providing insights into tumor behavior and potential therapeutic targets. In 2024, she defended her doctoral thesis titled "New Perspectives in Surgery and Oncology of Papillary Thyroid Cancer" at Semmelweis University, Budapest. This work offers innovative approaches to the surgical and oncological management of papillary thyroid cancer, reflecting her commitment to advancing treatment methodologies. Beyond her clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Lévay is dedicated to medical education, serving as an instructor at the Semmelweis University Experimental and Surgical Training Center. Her international experience includes participation in humanitarian missions, such as the Women for Women initiative in Nairobi, Kenya.

Thyroid Surgery in Local Anaesthesia: Renewal an Old Method
    Author(s): Bernadett Lévay*, Kiss A, Zelenai F, Elek J and Oberna F

Introduction: In the older times of thyroid surgery, the operations were performed under local anaesthesia. With the development of anaesthesia surgeons preferred to use narcosis for most thyroid surgeries. Today, however, regional anaesthesia has become popular as a safe and effective technique based on numerous clinical studies, surgeons are still keen on doing surgeries under general anaesthesia. Regional anaesthesia is indicated in high risk patients and also in case of pregnancy, but in well-fit patients it could lead to faster recovery. In case of a substernal goitre or infiltrating carcinoma or in case of severe bleeding disables general anaesthesia should be chosen.
