Dr. Carley Chen is a renowned expert in mass spectrometry and a professor at the University of São Paulo's Department of Mass Spectrometry. Her innovative research focuses on advancing analytical techniques for applications in biomedical science, environmental monitoring, and chemical engineering. Dr. Chen completed her B.Sc. in Chemistry at Tsinghua University and earned her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Her doctoral work, centered on developing advanced ionization techniques for mass spectrometry, earned her international recognition for its groundbreaking contributions to proteomics and metabolomics. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany, Dr. Chen joined the University of São Paulo in 2013. Her research spans a diverse array of topics, including high-resolution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and imaging mass spectrometry. Dr. Chen is particularly known for her work in applying mass spectrometry to identify disease biomarkers and investigate environmental pollutants. Her work has significantly advanced the sensitivity and accuracy of mass spectrometric methods, enabling transformative discoveries in life sciences and environmental chemistry. Dr. Chen has authored over 140 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as Analytical Chemistry, Mass Spectrometry Reviews, and Nature Biotechnology. She has also co-authored the influential book Advanced Techniques in Mass Spectrometry: Principles and Applications. Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Brazilian Society of Analytical Chemistry Research Excellence Award and the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation (IMSF) Innovation Prize.
