The hydrocarbon resource of shale gas and tight oil have had a significant effect on North American energy supplies over the previous decade. The production of supposed unconventional flammable gas from US and Canadian shale has saturated North American gas markets, supported Canada's exports and transformed the US into a net exporter of natural gas.
