Biography

Dr. János Elek is a distinguished anesthesiologist specializing in anesthesia and intensive care at the National Institute of Oncology (NIO) in Budapest, Hungary. Established in 1936, the NIO is Hungary's premier institution for cancer care, research, and education, coordinating the national oncology network and serving as a Comprehensive Cancer Center accredited by the Organization of European Cancer Institutes. In 2020, Dr. Elek co-authored the study "Thyroid Surgery in Local Anaesthesia: Renewal of an Old Method," published in the Journal of Thyroid Disorders & Therapy. This research revisits the practice of performing thyroid surgeries under local anesthesia, discussing its feasibility and benefits in modern surgical settings.     Thyroid Surgery in Local Anaesthesia: Renewal an Old Method

    Introduction: In the older times of thyroid surgery, the operations were performed under local anaesthesia. With the development of anaesthesia surgeons preferred to use narcosis for most thyroid surgeries. Today, however, regional anaesthesia has become popular as a safe and effective technique based on numerous clinical studies, surgeons are still keen on doing surgeries under general anaesthesia. Regional anaesthesia is indicated in high risk patients and also in case of pregnancy, but in well-fit patients it could lead to faster recovery. In case of a substernal goitre or infiltrating carcinoma or in case of severe bleeding disables general anaesthesia should be chosen.
