Dr. Jonathan Lin is Professor of Pathology and Ophthalmology at Stanford. He is internationally recognized as an expert in the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in human disease. His work provides significant mechanistic insights into how ER stress causes cell damage. His work established causality to human retinal degeneration and neurodegeneration diseases by identifying variants in ER stress and UPR genes in patients carrying those mutations. As a clinical fellow, Dr. Lin first discovered that the Unfolded Protein Response regulator, IRE1, determined life/death cell fates in response to ER stress.
