Biography

Dr. Juan Calviño Cabezas is a distinguished pediatrician and neonatologist at the Centro Hospitalar de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (CHTMAD) in Portugal. This institution serves a population of approximately 300,000 across 22 municipalities in the Vila Real, Chaves, and Lamego districts, providing comprehensive healthcare services.In 2021, Dr. Calviño Cabezas co-authored a notable clinical image report titled "Intrathyroidal Thymus: An Incidental Diagnosis," published in the Journal of Thyroid Disorders & Therapy. The report discusses a 4-year-old girl who presented with upper respiratory tract infections and cervical adenopathies. Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic nodule in the left thyroid lobe, initially suspected to be a thyroglossal duct cyst or ectopic thymus. Further imaging confirmed the diagnosis of an intrathyroidal ectopic thymus, a rare condition that can be misinterpreted as a thyroid nodule, leading to unnecessary interventions. The authors emphasize the importance of considering this diagnosis in pediatric patients to avoid unwarranted procedures.
