Quercetin Ameliorated the Alloxan Mediated Hepatic Injury in Diabetic Wistar Rats
Author(s): Muhammad Aslam*
Liver injury is a complex heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, diabetes,
abnormalities in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Alloxan an oxidation product of uric acid, 2, 4, 5, 6 (1H,
3H)-pyrimidinetetrone, capable of inducing diabetes by destroying pancreatic tissue and has been widely used
for induction of experimental diabetes. Quercetin are flavonoids and has been proved to be effective against
pancreatic islets in diabetogenic rats modulating glucose homeostasis, insulin-resistance, oxidative injury
and cell death. The present study demonstrated the alloxan induced liver injury and and its protection by
quercetin administration in adult male rats. Administration of 130 mg/kg alloxan for 28 days induce diabetes
associated liver injury as histomorphological alteration includes vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes, dilated
