Biography

Dr. Peng-Tai Tien is a researcher affiliated with the School of Medicine at China Medical University (CMU) in Taichung, Taiwan. His work primarily focuses on ophthalmology, with a particular interest in retinal diseases and their management. In 2024, Dr. Tien co-authored a study titled "Comparative efficacy of brolucizumab, half-dose photodynamic therapy, and aflibercept in managing chronic central serous chorioretinopathy," published in Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. This research evaluated the effectiveness of three treatment modalities for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC): brolucizumab, half-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT), and aflibercept. The study concluded that brolucizumab and half-dose PDT were more effective than aflibercept in improving visual acuity and reducing subretinal fluid in patients with chronic CSC. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing treatment strategies for this condition. In 2020, Dr. Tien contributed to the research article "Thyroid Eye Disease not Associated with the Risk for Uveitis: A 13-Year Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan," published in the Journal of Thyroid Disorders & Therapy. This study investigated whether patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) had an increased risk of developing uveitis. The results indicated no significant association between TED and the incidence of uveitis, suggesting that different autoimmune mechanisms may underlie these conditions. Dr. Tien's contributions to ophthalmological research have enhanced the understanding of retinal diseases and their treatments, as well as the relationships between systemic and ocular conditions. His work continues to inform clinical practices, aiming to improve patient outcomes in ophthalmology.

Purpose: To investigate whether patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) are at increased risk of uveitis. Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with TED from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. Results: 444 patients with TED yielding1,776 matched comparisons revealed that patients with TED were found to have no significantly higher risk for developing uveitis. When comparison of TED and non-TED group was stratified by gender, and age, the association of TED and uveitis was also not significant. Conclusion: TED is characterized as an extraocular inflammatory disease and uveitis is an intraocular inflammation. In the largest study of TED in uveitis to date, our finding.. View More»
