Biography

Dr. Yi-Yu Tsai is a distinguished nephrologist affiliated with the An-Shin Dialysis Center, NephroCare Ltd., Fresenius Medical Care in Taichung, Taiwan. His clinical expertise encompasses the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its systemic complications, with a particular focus on the intersection between renal health and ocular conditions. In 2021, Dr. Tsai co-authored a pivotal study titled "Chronic Kidney Disease as a Potential Risk Factor for Retinal Vascular Disease: A 13-Year Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan," published in Medicine (Baltimore). This research investigated the association between CKD and the incidence of retinal vascular diseases, revealing that CKD patients had a higher risk of developing these ocular conditions. The study underscored the importance of regular ophthalmologic evaluations for CKD patients to facilitate early detection and management of retinal complications. In 2022, Dr. Tsai contributed to the study "The Incidence of Uveitis After Systemic Lymphoma in Taiwan: An 18-Year Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study," published in Ocular Immunology and Inflammation. This research examined the incidence of uveitis in patients with systemic lymphoma, providing valuable insights into the ocular manifestations associated with hematologic malignancies. Dr. Tsai's dedication to nephrology and his interdisciplinary approach have significantly advanced the understanding of the systemic effects of kidney diseases, particularly their impact on ocular health. His contributions continue to inform clinical practices, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive care for patients with chronic conditions.

Purpose: To investigate whether patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) are at increased risk of uveitis. Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with TED from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. Results: 444 patients with TED yielding1,776 matched comparisons revealed that patients with TED were found to have no significantly higher risk for developing uveitis. When comparison of TED and non-TED group was stratified by gender, and age, the association of TED and uveitis was also not significant. Conclusion: TED is characterized as an extraocular inflammatory disease and uveitis is an intraocular inflammation. In the largest study of TED in uveitis to date, our finding.. View More»
