Biography

Dr. Wang Charles is a renowned professor in the Department of Chromatography at the University of Melbourne, recognized for his pioneering contributions to the field of separation science. His work focuses on advancing chromatographic techniques for applications in pharmaceuticals, environmental monitoring, and complex biological systems. Dr. Charles earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Peking University and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. His doctoral research on the development of innovative stationary phases for liquid chromatography received international acclaim for its transformative impact on improving resolution and efficiency in analytical separations. He further honed his expertise during a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley. Since joining the University of Melbourne in 2010, Dr. Charles has established himself as a leader in chromatographic research. His contributions include the development of multidimensional chromatography, high-speed separations, and green chromatographic practices. His groundbreaking methods have significantly enhanced the capabilities of separation science, particularly in proteomics, metabolomics, and environmental analysis. Dr. Charles has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Journal of Chromatography A, Analytical Chemistry, and Nature Protocols. He is also the editor of the widely used textbook Modern Chromatographic Science: Principles and Applications. His achievements have earned him numerous awards, including the Australian Academy of Science Medal for Analytical Excellence and the International Chromatography Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
