Biography

Dr. Zenais Shayo is a prominent figure in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Dodoma in Tanzania. Her research primarily focuses on the effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on cellular senescence—a state where cells lose their ability to divide and proliferate, often in response to stress or damage. In her 2024 publication, "The Impact of Chemotherapy and Radiation on Cellular Senescence," Dr. Shayo examines how these cancer treatments can induce senescence in both malignant and normal cells. She discusses the role of the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP), which includes pro-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and proteases that can affect the surrounding tissue environment, potentially leading to chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction. While these treatments are effective in targeting and killing cancer cells, they can also induce cellular senescence, contributing to side effects such as tissue fibrosis, impaired wound healing, and an increased risk of secondary cancers. She explores potential strategies to mitigate these adverse effects, including the use of senolytic drugs designed to selectively eliminate senescent cells and the modulation of SASP to reduce inflammation and prevent tissue damage.
