Biography

Agni Kalfagianni is Assistant Professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), VU University of Amsterdam. She holds a Bachelor degree in Environmental Science from the University of the Aegean (Greece), an MSc in Environmental Economics from the University of York (U.K.) and a PhD from the Center of Clean Technology and Environmental Policy (CSTM), University of Twente (The Netherlands). Agni’s main research interests are in global environmental governance, with a special focus on the role of private actors, in particular corporations, therein. She is interested in the challenges and opportunities increasingly powerful private institutions, such as standards, codes of conduct and corporate social responsibility initiatives, pose for global governance, from a democratic legitimacy, effectiveness and justice perspective. Relevant articles have been published in Agriculture and Human Values, Journal of Business Ethics, Marine Policy, and contributions have been made to edited volumes with major university press, e.g. MIT press.

Research Interest

Legitimacy; Effectiveness and justice of global environmental governance with a special focus on fisheries and aquaculture and the agrifood sector.
