Biography

Prof. Andrew Ottens received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Florida and completed his postdoctoral training in Neuroscience at the McKnight Brain Institute. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology and Biochemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia. Prof. Ottens is also a member of the editorial advisory board for Expert Review of Proteomics has authored over twenty five research articles and book chapters and recently edited a volume entitled Neuroproteomics  Methods and Protocols. He is a member of the American Chemical Society the American Society for Mass Spectrometry the Society for Neuroscience and the National Neurotrauma Society. Dr. Ottens has been honored with the Bates Award for Excellence in Analytical Chemistry and an NIH Career Quantitative Research Development Award

Research Interest

Prof. Ottens studies the biochemical impact of trauma and toxicity in the brain with an interest in the temporal progression of injury and repair mechanisms and their modulation via treatment. His research involves expertise in neuroproteomics, applying large-scale quantitative methods for temporal characterization of perturbed brain biochemistry. The neuroproteome is perhaps one of the most complex biological mixtures, involving research at the extreme of molecular separations.
