Andrew R Wyant

Biography

Dr. Wyant graduated from the University of Evansville in 1989 with a B.S in Chemistry and a Biology minor. With an interest in science education and in medicine he then went on to Medical School, graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993 with the Doctor of Medicine degree. He then completed a post-graduate residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1997. From July of 1996 through June of 1997, Andy served as Chief Resident on Obstetrics and Gynecology services. During his third year of residency training, he was selected as one of ten Felix-Rutledge fellows in the country to complete a junior fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas, which he completed in April of 1996. During his resicency training, Dr. Wyant also became passionate about Emergency Medicine and the interface between primary care, acute-care medicine, trauma, and gynecology. This is where his career would split his time and interest between Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. He became Board-Certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2002 after five years of practice. Dr. Wyant has practiced clinical medicine for fifteen years in both Obstetrics, Gynecologic Surgery, and Emergency Medicine specialties. He ran a successful private practice in Indiana for many years where he focused on Gyn Surgery, Primary Care for Women, and routine Obstetrics. He left private practice to focus on full-time Emergency Medicine in 2007. Always having an interest in academics, Dr. Wyant accepted a position at the University of Kentucky; College of Health Sciences in PA-studies in 2010. He has taught Anatomy and Physiology in the past and over his years of clinical practice has developed an interest in the connection of Physiology in health and the mechanisms of disease in Pathology. Therefore he was excited to teach Graduate Physiology PGY412G to the Physician Assistant students and Pathophysiology PAS653; where he uses clinical accumen and his experience in diagnosis to teach the range of mechanisms in both health and disease. He also enjoys teaching Radiographic Interpretation in a Clinical Skills course. Since coming to the faculty at UK (Morehead Campus at MSU), Dr. Wyant has also been involved in teaching clinical skills using Simulation and Interprofessionalism. This is an area of exciting research and education that Dr. Wyant hopes to expand in the future. He has also recorded and produced a podcast, "Physiology Scholar" which he uses to enhance the educational process in Physiology 412G.

Research Interest

Simulation in Medical Education, Maternal-Fetal Trauma, Gynecologic Emergencies, Diagnostic delimmas in Emergency Medicine, Radiographic modalities in diagnosis and the ethical line between life and death.
