Biography

I graduated with a BS degree in Biochemistry in 1985 from the National University of Galway, Ireland. I entered The Department of Biochemistry graduate program in the same year and graduated with a Ph.D. I subsequently did my post-doctoral research with Dr. Bert O’Malley in the Department of Cell Biology at Baylor College of Medicine In Houston. The focus of this research was the regulation of gene expression by nuclear receptors. Over the last decade that research has expanded to include germ cells, primordial germ cells and other pluripotent cell types such as embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. Our focus has been regulation of gene expression by nuclear receptors in each of these cell and developmental systems. We have been using a combination of state-of the-art mouse molecular genetics, stem cell molecular biology and recently ’omics’ to study the role of nuclear receptors in germ cell development.
