Bogdan Nowicki was physician-scientist with OB/GYN training and have 20 years of NIH funding history focused on pathogenesis of urinary tract infection. His long-term goal is to understand the mechanism of gestational pyelonephritis, develop more effective strategies to eradicate gestational UTI and aid in developing, alternative to antibiotic, therapeutic strategies focused on preventing gestational complications. Thus his laboratory performs the researches like- (1) pioneered studies on gestational tropism of E. coli-bearing Dr adhesins (Dr+ E. coli) and pyelonephritis; (2) cloned E. coli Dr adhesion; (3) discovered the Dradhesin receptor, CD55/DAF; (4) showed that Dr + E. coli can invade epithelial cells; (5) established an E. coli experimental uterine infection model in pregnant rats; showed that (6) Dra E adhesin is a key lethal factor in pregnant but not non-pregnant rats; and (6) in collaborative study, resolved the atomic structure of Dr adhesion and its receptor DAF/CD55.
We now intend to focus our study on molecular mechanism of virulence associated with Dr adhesion epitopes, Dr adhesion DAF signaling and to develop preventive strategies to protect pregnant females and fetuses from serious complications of gestational UTI.
