Assistant Professor, Department of pharmacology and toxicology
The University of Arizona, USA
Dr. Daekyu Sun completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral training at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Sun was employed with the Cancer Therapy Research Center (CTRC) at San Antonio, Texas from 1995 to 2002 as a Research Scientist and Assistant Member. Dr. Sun has been employed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona at Tucson, Arizona since 2008.
Dr. Sun is currently exploring a new therapeutic strategy to repress the transcriptional activation of human oncogenes with small molecules capable of binding selectively to non-canonical DNA structures formed within the promoter region of this gene. Another aspect of his work focuses on understanding the chemical and biological mechanisms of the antineoplastic, DNA-damaging natural products to relate their chemical and biochemical properties to its unique biological activity. Other aspects of our research focus on understanding the molecular basis and the biological significance of induction of DNA repair genes in human cancer cells in response to major chemotherapeutics in order to identify potential targets appropriate for new anticancer agents that will enhance the lethal activity of many cancer chemotherapeutics.
