Head of Experimental Neurosurgery, Department of Neurosurgery
Frankfurt University, Germany
Donat Kögel is currently the Head of the Section of Experimental Neurosurgery at the Goethe-University Hospital in Frankfurt. His research focuses on the molecular events leading to gliomagenesis, as well as apoptosis deficiency and therapy resistance of glioblastoma multiforme, the most malignant and deadly human primary brain tumor. Currently, his research focuses on investigating novel genetic insight-based therapeutic strategies for the treatment of gliomas in cell culture models and in transplantable syngeneic animal tumor models. Another major aim in Donat Kögel´s lab is to identify the relevant pathophysiological stress stimuli and apoptotic signalling pathways implicated in apoptotic neuron death in stroke, Alzheimer´s disease and Parkinson´s disease. Here, he has made important contributions to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal cell death, the transcriptional responses to pathophysiological stress in neurons, and neuroprotective signalling pathways modulated by lesion-induced cytokines in the brain.
