Dr. Elena Karnaukhova is a Research and Regulatory Scientist with the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Vascular Biology, Division of Hematology, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, US Food and Drug Administration. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry of Biologically Active Compounds from Lomonosov Institute of Fine Chemical Technology (Moscow, Russia) where she subsequently became an Associate Professor. She was a visiting scientist in Leiden University (Holland), Medical University of Vienna (Austria) and CNRS (Orleans, France). After moving to the US, she developed an extensive expertise in protein structure-function research and biophysical assessment working as a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Chemistry of Columbia University (New York, NY) and Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC). Currently, Dr. Karnaukhova’s regulatory review work in the Division of Hematology (CBER, FDA) relates to human plasma-derived and recombinant protein therapeutics, whereas her research is focused on the investigation of structure-function relationships of proteins involved in the contact, complement and coagulation systems, as well as conformational diseases and heme scavenging. With her expertise in protein biochemistry and therapeutic development, Dr. Karnaukhova serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals.
Protein biochemistry, structure-function relationships, ligand-protein interactions, native human plasma and recombinant proteins, serine protease inhibitors, hemoproteins, protein therapeutics, biophysical and biochemical assessment.
