Dr. Elizabeth George is Professor and Senior Consultant Hematologist at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Putra Malaysia (UPM). As an active academic staff member of the UPM, she is involved in programs on medicine, biomedicine, nursing and as supervisor of graduate students in Masters of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). She is a visiting consultant hematologist at the Institute of Medical Research, Assunta Hospital and Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur. She is also the Laboratory Director of StemLife Berhad. Her basic medical degree is from University of Malaya, and has specialist qualifications FRCPA (Royal College of Pathologists Australasia), FRCPE (Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh), and a medical doctorate MD (National University of Singapore). Her main research interest since 1977 has been in the field of red cell disorders in the area of thalassemia. She was a member of the development group that produced Clinical Practice Guidelines on the `Management of transfusion dependent thalassaemia’ organised by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in 2009. Professor Elizabeth George currently heads the Thalassemia Research group, a niche area of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Research encompasses clinical aspects, treatment modalities, screening protocols and identification of the spectrum of mutations including gene modifiers that result in thalassemia in the different ethnic groups in Malaysia. This information led to improved patient management, genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis. She has received a number of research awards, research grants and has over eighty-eight publications related to thalassaemia in peer reviewed journals. In addition, she has been the author of a monograph on thalassaemia carrier diagnosis in Malaysia and a book on HbE beta-thalassaemia in West Malaysia.
