Jalal A Aliyev

Biography

Sixty five years dynamic researches of Professor Jalal A.Aliyev have been devoted to the study of the theory of photosynthetic activity as a fundamental for productivity of crop plants, mainly wheat. The overall activity of these researches covers physiological, biophysical, biochemical and molecular-genetic bases of plant productivity and also the study of production processes in all levels of structural-functional organization of plant organism - from molecular to the whole plant and sowing. Jalal Aliyev has acted as the initiator and founder of the development of new directions of researches, namely molecular biology, molecular genetics, gene and cellular biotechnology, etc in Azerbaijan. In particular, activities in computational biology and Bioinformatics in Azerbaijan have been initiated by J.Aliyev in 1970 of last century. Under initiative of the J.Aliyev, about 300 PhD and doctors of sciences have been trained and prepared. More than 80 of them (80 PhD and 11 Doctor of Sciences) successfully defended their thesis under his supervision. Now his skilled and qualified students are currently leading scientists in many research centers and Universities both in Azerbaijan and abroad, such as in Commonwealth of Independent States, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Israel and European countries. J.Aliyev has authored more than 600 scientific publications, including 25 monographs and books published in local and reputed international editions. A large number of durum (Triticum durum Desf.) and bread (Triticum aestivum L.) wheat genotypes with productivity of 7-8 tons per hectare with excellent quality of grain-grades were developed which are now widely cultivated in Azerbaijan. He is a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences and the Academy of Agrarian Sciences of the Republic of Belarus. J.Aliyev is the Honoured Scientific Worker. For his great contributions to science in Azerbaijan, J.Aliyev was honoured with the Order of Independence (1998), the Order of Glory of the Republic of Georgia in 2003, the Honourary diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2008) and with the Order of Glory of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2013). He was elected as a Member of Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan for fourth time (1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010). At present, he is a head of Department of Fundamental Problems of Biological Productivity in the Institute of Botany, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and head of Department of Plant Physiology and Biotechnology in the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry.
