Kyung-Sun Kang is Professor of College of Veterinary Medicine and founding Director of the Adult Stem Cell Research Center at Seoul National University.
Dr. Kang is a chair of the stem cells steering committee of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) in Korea, and a member of evaluation committee of the governmental performance of Korean Food and Administration (KFDA). He was recently Co-Chair of the German-Korean Workshops for Regenerative Medicine-from basic research to beside. He currently serves a review board directorate for national S&E programs, National Reseqrch Foundation of Korea (NRF). He is a member of the International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), KSSCR, Korean Society of Toxicology and TERMIS.
Dr. Kang has been working with human adult stem cells for more than 15 years, and his current research focuses on discovering the molecular basis of their pluripotency and differentiation. A key goal of his research is to discover the key elements that control the unique epigenetic mechanisms of human adult stem cell aging and use this knowledge for improved reprogramming methods for human somatic cells and more efficiently expand adult stem cells for clinical usages.
In addition to investigating the fundamental biology of human adult stem cells, Dr. Kang is developing practical applications for these cells for drug discovery, drug delivery, and cell therapy. A major interest of his laboratory is to use stem cells to discover novel therapies for Alzheimer′s disease, Clowns’ disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes.
In addition to his basic and applied research, Dr. Kang is training the next generation of stem cell scientists, domestically and internationally.
