Loh Kian Ping
Professor, Department of Chemistry
LSI-National University of Singapore, Singapore
Professor Kian Ping Loh obtained his D.Phil from University of Oxford (supervisor: Prof John S. Food) in 1996 and worked in NIMS, Japan between 1997 and 1998 (supervisor Dr Toshihiro Ando). Both his doctoral and post-doctoral work concerned the surface chemistry of diamond, an area which he has worked for some time. From 1999 to now, he is based in the National University of Singapore and leads the effort in functional carbon materials research. He has an established track record on functional carbon materials research, focusing on the surface functionalization, biosensing, solar and optical applications of diamond and graphene. The expertise of his group ranges from optical studies of advanced functional carbon materials, design and synthesis of organic dyes, molecular electronics to solar cells and surface science. The expertise in his group now includes the large area fabrication of graphene films by CVD, synthesis of solution-processed and printable graphene electronics, synthesis of organic dye-derivatized graphene, graphene-titania composites, with a view towards applications in solar cells. Breakthroughs in his research include the fabrication of organic solar cell on transparent and conducting, large area graphene electrodes, and the first demonstration of wide band mode locking on atomic layer graphene. He has won the Faculty Young Scientist award in 2007, University Young Researcher award in 2008, Oustanding Chemist award in 2009 and the Singapore Millenium Foundation-Research Horizon award in 2010 and the Dean’s Chair Professorship in 2010.
His current research interests include the study of Graphene oxide as Organocatalysts, Organic functionalization of graphene, Synthesis of organic dyes, and Fabrication of organic solar cell.
