Dr. Mary Flaherty is a lecturer in the School of Psychology and Social Science at Edith Cowan University. Having obtained her B.A. in psychology from University College Dublin, she was offered a Ministry of Education Scholarship from the Japanese Government to pursue her graduate research at Ryukyu University where she studied the cognitive processing of Chinese Characters (Kanji). She later went on to lecture at Osaka Gakkuin University and KanseiGakkuin University in Japan. Her research extended to investigating the cognitive underpinnings of using Sign Language in Japanese and English reading deaf people. Mary lectured at University College Dublin and Trinity College before moving to Australia six years ago.Dr. Flaherty has published articles in international peer reviewed journals on a variety of topics, ranging from reading, deaf issues, deictic reference, and visuo-spatial processing. Her long-term personal interest and practice of meditation and yoga opened up her more recent research interest.
