Rafael A. Cañas has obtained his PhD in 2006 under the supervision of the Prof Francisco M. Cánovas and Dr. Francisco R. Cantón in the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Department of the University of Malaga (Spain). His PhD thesis was about the nitrogen re-mobilization from the storage proteins of the pine seeds during the germination and initial seedling development being mainly focused in the role of the asparagine. Subsequently, he obtained a competitive postdoctoral fellowship from Spanish Education Ministry to work in the IJPB-Versailles, INRA (France) under the supervision of Dr. Bertrand Hirel. In this stage, he studied the nitrogen metabolism of the maize ears and their relationship with the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Now, he is a researcher in the University of Málaga, developing projects about nitrogen metabolism of adult conifers.
Rafael A. Cañas is interested in the plant nitrogen metabolism focused in the amino acids interconversions during the lifetime of trees.
