Biography

Professor Richard Simpson received his PhD in biochemistry and chemistry at Melbourne University, Australia in 1974. After post-doctoral studies at the NIH, Bethesda, Maryland, he returned to Australia as a Research Fellow at St. Vincent & middot\\\\ s Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne. He is currently the Head of the Joint Protoemics Laboratory of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, a Research Professor at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Professor at Yonsei University, Korea. He is the Chairperson of the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) Finance Committee and Treasurer of HUPO. On a national level, Professor Simpson is the President of the Australasian Proteomics Society (APS). Professor Simpson was awarded, in 2003, the Centenary Medal from the Australian Government “For service to Australian society in research and development” and in 2008 received the HUPO Distinguished Service Award “For indispensible contributions in his service to HUPO since the inauguration of HUPO in 2000”. He has published over 352 research publications, has an h-index of 60 (based on ISI citations as of August 16, 2007). [ref. J.E. Hirsch, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 2005, 102, 16569] and holds 14 patents. With the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, Professor Simpson has written three leading text books on proteomics – Proteins and Proteomics: A Laboratory Manual (2003), Purifying Proteins for Proteomics: A Laboratory Manual (2004) and, more recently Basic Methods in Protein Purification and Analysis: A Laboratory Manual (2009).
