Dr. Zhang PhD and postdoctoral training was in human genetics of complex traits (e.g., drug response, gene expression), genomics and bioinformatics. In May, 2010, Dr. Zhang joined the UIC faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Zhang is a leader in bioinformatics and statistical genetics for the UIC Institute for Personalized Respiratory Medicine and the UIC Institute of Human Genetics. Dr. Zhang is the Core Co-leader (Genome-wide Application Core) for the NIH/NHLBI Program Project Grant entitled "Roles of sphingolipids in the pathology of lung injury" and Co-PI/Co-investigator on a number of internal/extramural research grants on lung disease and pharmacogenomics. Dr. Zhang is particularly interested in using high-throughput technologies (e.g., microarray, next-generation sequencing), statistical genetic and bioinformatic tools to study the genetics and epigenetics of complex traits/phenotypes with an emphasis on lung disease including sarcoidosis, acute lung injury, IPF, and sickle cell disease.
