Wutian Wu

Professor Wu received his medical degree in Sun YatSen University of Medical Sciences, Guangdong, China in 1975 and a Master Degree in Neuroanatomy in the same institute in 1981. He was a clinician and later a teacher for medical students for more 10 years in Mainland China and went to US for his oversea study and work. Prof. Wu received his PhD degree in Neuroscience in 1991 and continued to work in Eastern Virginia Medical School till 1996. Prof Wu joined the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong in Jan. 1996 as an assistant professor, promoted to associate professor in 1997 and professor in 2008. Prof Wu ’s research is well recognized. His contributions include: 1 A total of over 100 original peer review articles with more than 2000 citations received; 2 Initiation of 14 active international and local collaborative studies with a few of outstanding research groups Centers; 3 A total of 29 research grants 23 as principal investigator and 6 as coinvestigator with total of over HK 20 millions awarded; 4 More than 40 invited lectures, visiting professorship
1. Gene expression changes of motoneurons after axonal injury and their potential roles in neuronal degeneration and regeneration.
2. Experimental studies on surgical treatment of avulsed spinal nerve roots in brachial plexus injury.
3. Potential treatments for spinal cord injury.
4. Research in other areas: A) to explore the potential use of neural stem cells in replacing died neurons due to CNS injury or disorder. B) to investigate a possible application of nano-materials in neuronal injury. C) to investigate new drugs for the treatment of neural degenerative disease.
