A lumbar puncture (spinal tap) is done on lower back, in the lumbar region on spinal cord. During a lumbar puncture, a needle is embedded between two lumbar bones (vertebrae) to collect a sample of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF). This is the fluid that encompasses brain and spinal cord to shield them from injury. A lumbar puncture can assist with diagnosing infections, like meningitis; different issues of the focal sensory system, like Guillain-Barre syndrome and multiple sclerosis. A lumbar puncture is used to inject chemotherapy drugs or sedative drugs into CSF.
