One of the numerous aspects of the burden experienced by nurses working in Intensive Care Units, as stated in this, is the physical workload related to patient handling. The consequences of workload on several outcomes are discussed, including nurse health, safety, and quality of life at work as well as the security of the care provided by ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nurses. It is recommended to use a methodical approach to workload assessment with the aim of identifying the factors in the work system that influence the various components of workload as well as the relationships between the different workload dimensions.

Providing medical services to patients and holding executive roles in hospitals, health systems, and other organizations, nurses play a key role in the healthcare sector. Contrarily, there are several challenges associated with becoming a nurse. Although nursing has a wide range of applications, it is becoming less popular since nurses do not receive enough financial recompense or acknowledgment for their work, which is far more demanding than that of doctors and other medical professionals. They deal with patients on a regular basis and put in unfathomably long hours, yet they are nevertheless compensated inadequately. Because of their responsibilities, nurses should be paid more and shown greater respect. The aggressive behavior of the hospital is another issue that nurses have to deal with. Many patients are challenging to engage with and even hostile. As a result, this line of work may occasionally be quite demanding and stressful. In order to lessen the challenges they encounter at hospitals, nurses should seek to improve their interactions with doctors and other staff members, as well as their job requirements, organizational practices, and acknowledgement of competence.

Especially in intensive care units, nursing practices are essential in providing high-quality treatment. Nevertheless, these procedures differ based on a variety of factors, including the operational environment, the type of the illness, the workload, personnel training and experience, cost-effectiveness, as well as the clinical results of the diseased patients. Since ICU patient care demands such close attention, ICU nurses must overcome a number of difficult challenges. Nurses who want to work in the ICU effectively must learn how to deal with these challenges, and developing that comfort requires many hours of first-hand experience.

ICU nurses endure a variety of difficulties, but most of them who enter the field have above-average physical and mental stamina and they learn to overcome them. By placing an emphasis on the abilities that an ICU nurse needs to be successful, burnout and compassion weariness may be managed and prevented as transient symptoms. The nurse-to-patient ratio has reportedly been used to evaluate patient safety in relation to nursing workload. Yet, prior studies have demonstrated that the link between the nursing workload and patient volume is more complex and cannot be anticipated by a simple ratio like the nurse-to-patient ratio. This nurse-to-patient ratio is taken into account as a benchmark for evaluating all facets of ICU care since it is easily accessible and straightforward to utilize. Poor nursing care may result in a number of unfavorable outcomes for patients in the ICU, according to the evidence, including higher fatality rates, lengthier hospital admissions, and the development of in-hospital infections. Further study on the appropriate distribution of nursing skills based on available healthcare resources is needed in order to prevent such unfavorable consequences.
