BASANT, A Unique Polyherbal Formulation that Cures Abnormal Vaginal Discharge, Protects Women from Sexually Transmitted Infections and Eliminates HPV Causing Carcinoma of Cervix

Introduction

We formulated a Polyherbal formulation named as BASANT, consisting of Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), Aloe vera, purified extracts of Amla (Emblica Officinalis) and Neem (Azadirachta Indica) along with pharmacopially approved excipients [1]. It is dispensed in Capsules. Women suffering from Vaginosis (abnormal vaginal discharge) get cured from this syndrome by intravaginal use of BASANT, as shown in Figure 1.

Sexual Tract Infections

BASANT inhibits all WHO strains, and clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including those resistant to penicillin, tetracycline, nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin. It has also pronounced inhibitory action against Candida glabrata, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis isolated from women with vulvovaginal candidiasis, including three isolates resistant to azole drugs and amphotericin. BASANT inhibits Chlamydia trachomatis invitro and invivo [2,3].

Efficacy Against Hiv

Of great interest is the efficacy of BASANT against HIV. Gustavo Doncel at CONRAD Eastern Virginia Medical School Arlington, USA confirmed inhibition of virus by Basant in HIV-1 NL4.3-infected CEM-GFP and P4 cells. Studies were also conducted by Manoj Pastey at the University of Oregon, USA. BASANT prevented the entry of HIV in lymphocytes employing either CCR4 or CCR5 receptors [1,4].

Elimination of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

What is amazing is that BASANT also eliminates HPV-16, which eventually causes Carcinoma of Cervix. A clinical trial was conducted by Prof. Rajyashree Sharma at JN Medical College, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Table 1 gives the results in 11 women, who had HPV infection. All women became HPV negative after inserting a capsule containing 245 mg of BASANT in the vagina every night for 30 days [5].

Transfer of Basant to Industry

With due approval of Drugs Regulatory Authorities and Institutional Ethics Committees, it has undergone successfully safety and efficacy trials. It is licensed to M/s Bipha Drugs, Kottayam, Kerala, India, for making it available to Public.
