The concept of isolating individuals with contagious diseases to prevent their spread predates modern medicine. Historical accounts reveal instances of quarantine measures being implemented during outbreaks of plague and other infectious diseases.
The modern concept of isolation precautions began to take shape in the 19th century with the pioneering work of Ignaz Semmelweis and Florence Nightingale. Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician, advocated for hand hygiene to reduce the transmission of puerperal fever in maternity wards, leading to significant reductions in infection rates.
