Description

A cystoscopy is a technique that uses a tiny camera called a cystoscope to view within the bladder. To view within the bladder, a doctor or nurse will introduce a cystoscope into the urethra (the tube that removes urine from the body). To simultaneously treat numerous bladder problems, the cystoscope can also be utilized to introduce microscopic surgical instruments. In order to diagnose and treat issues with the bladder or urethra, a cystoscopy might be utilized. It can be utilized, for instance to examine the source of issues including persistent pelvic discomfort, recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), blood in the urine. A piece of tissue to be tested in a lab (a biopsy) to look for issues like bladder cancer. It also includes the procedures like clearing the bladder with stones, placing or removing a stent (a tiny tube used to clear obstructions), and administering medication via injection. A urologist performs a cystoscopy to view the bladder and urethra from the inside using a scope. Physicians use cystoscopy to identify and treat urinary tract issues. These conditions include bladder cancer, enlarged prostates, UTIs, and problems with bladder control. While occasionally unpleasant, a cystoscopy is not often painful. The urethra is numbed with local anaesthetic gel prior to a flexible cystoscopy. This can ease any pain experienced during cystoscope insertion. Patient won't feel any discomfort during a rigid cystoscopy since it is performed while patient are under a general anaesthetic or a spinal anaesthetic, which numbs the bottom part of patient body. After a cystoscopy, it's usual to experience some discomfort when urinating, but this should go away in a few days. After a cystoscopy, patient ought to be able to soon return to normal. The majority of the time, patient may leave the hospital the same day and resume patient regular activities, such as work, exercising, and having sex, as soon as patient feel ready. If patient underwent a flexible cystoscopy, this may happen later that day, whereas a stiff cystoscopy might happen a few days later. For a day or two, it's common to have discomfort when urinating and a small amount of blood in patients urine.

Types

Patients remain awake throughout the procedure, which uses a flexible cystoscope that is narrow (about the thickness of a pencil). Patients are either put to sleep or the bottom part of patient body is numbed while having a rigid cystoscopy, which uses a somewhat broader cystoscope that does not flex. If all that has to be seen inside patient bladder during the operation, flexible cystoscopies are often performed. If patient bladder has to be treated, a rigid cystoscopy may be performed.

Applications in medicine

A suggestion for a cystoscopy may be necessary in any of the following circumstances is hematuria, blood in the faeces, overactive bladder, or bladder control issues, urinary tract infections, (However, for the first diagnosis of simple overactive bladder, the American Urogynecologic Association does not recommend employing diagnostic renal and bladder ultrasonography, cystoscopy, or urodynamics). One of the disorders that may cause urinary obstruction is prostate enlargement, stricture, or constriction of the urinary system, urinary tract stones and unusual growths such polyps, tumours, or cancer.
