Description

Adenoviruses can infect the lining of the eyes, airways and lungs, intestines, urinary tract, and brain. Fever, coughing, sore throats, diarrhoea, and pink eye are all frequent symptoms. Infections affect children more frequently than adults, but they can affect everyone. By the age of ten, most children will have been infected with at least one form of adenovirus. The infections normally only cause minor symptoms and clear up on their own after a few days. They are, however, more harmful in people who have a compromised immune system, such as children.

How adenoviruses spread

In surrondings with large numbers of children, such as day care facilities, schools, and summer camps, these infections are frequent. They're quite infectious. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they can spread. Virus-carrying droplets float through the air and fall on surfaces. When the child brushes the hand of someone who has the virus or a toy or other object held by someone who has it, and then touches their mouth, nose, or eyes, they can contract the virus. Children are more likely to put their hands on their faces and in their mouths, so it spreads quickly. When changing a diaper, you can become contaminated. We can also become ill from eating food prepared by someone who did not properly wash their hands after using the restroom. It is possible to contract the virus from water, such as tiny lakes or a poorly maintained swimming pool, but this is uncommon.

Symptoms

Each form of adenovirus can have a distinct effect on people:

• Cough, runny nose, fever, and chills are all symptoms of bronchitis.

• Colds and other bacterial diseases of the respiratory tract.

• Croup symptoms include a barking cough, difficulty breathing, and a high-pitched sound when breathing in.

• Ear infection symptoms include ear pain, irritation, and fever.

• Conjunctivitis (pink eye) causes red eyes, discharge from the eyes, crying, and the sensation that something is stuck in the eye.

• Also shows symptoms like pneumonia, Fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

• Diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, fever, and stomach pains are symptoms of stomach and intestine infections.

• Brain and spinal cord swelling (meningitis and encephalitis).

• Urinary tract infections are characterised by burning and pain during urination, due to this blood also flows in urine.

Diagnosis

Your child's doctor may perform a physical exam and one or more of the following tests to determine whether the infection was caused by a virus or bacteria.

Blood test: A nurse will take a sample of your child’s blood from a vein in their arm.

Urine test: A nurse will use a urine collection tube to collect the urine sample from the child.

Swab test: A nurse will use a cotton swab to get a sample of mucus from your child’s nose.

Stool test: At home, you'll collect a sample of your child's stool and bring it to the doctor.

Chest Xray: This test is used to detect whether the child have any pneumonia-related complications, such as abscesses or pleural effusions by using radiations.

Treatment

Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections because they only kill bacteria. In most cases, children recover on their own within a few days. Pink eye or pneumonia, for example, can continue for a week or longer.
