The tools for studying epigenetic phenomena have developed during the recent years toward more global analysis of epigenetic status of the cells and tissues. The first studies of, for example, DNA methylation were focused on specific genes of interest and/or total amount of DNA methylation in the cell, but with first microarray techniques and more recently the next-generation sequencing methods, the interest is moving towards mapping the whole genome at single residue level
