Hypersensitivity Syndrome

Hypersensitivity Syndrome. Synonym(s): DRESS, Drug Hypersensitivity Syndrome, Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms A life-threatening allergic reaction to a drug. Hypersensitivity syndrome is characterized by fever, rash, organ involvement (most frequently the liver), and high blood levels of eosinophils.

Type 4 hypersensitivity is often called delayed type hypersensitivity as the reaction takes several days to develop. Unlike the other types, it is not antibody-mediated but rather is a type of cell-mediated response.

Drug hypersensitivity syndrome is a severe, unexpected reaction to a medicine, which affects several organ systems at the same time. It most commonly causes the combination of: Drug hypersensitivity syndrome is sometimes also called drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), and drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS).
