Plasmalogens are an exceptional class of membrane glycerophospholipids containing a fatty liquor with a vinyl-ether bond at the sn-1 position, and enhanced in polyunsaturated unsaturated fats at the sn-2 situation of the glycerol backbone. These two highlights give novel properties to these compounds. There are two types of ether phospholipids, plasmanyl-and plasmenyl-phospholipids. Plasmanyl-phospholipids have an ether bond in position sn-1 to an alkyl gathering. Plasmenyl-phospholipids have an ether bond in position sn-1 to an alkenyl group. The latter are called plasmalogens. The most common head groups present in mammalian plasmalogens is ethanolamine.
